The New Zealand EV Market in 2024: Progress and Opportunities

New Zealand’s electric vehicle (EV) market evolved in 2024, with changing policies and market conditions shaping its trajectory. While the removal of the Clean Car Discount (CCD) and the introduction of road user charges (RUC) presented challenges, EV adoption continued, and businesses are leading the way in fleet electrification.

Key Trends in the 2024 NZ EV Market

EV Market Growth and Adoption

In 2024, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up approximately 7.3% of new light passenger vehicle registrations, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) accounted for 3.9%, bringing the total EV market share to 11.2% of new light passenger vehicle sales in 2024.

As of December 2024, there were 83,812 registered BEVs and 35,203 PHEVs, totalling 119,015 EVs in New Zealand. This represents 2.45% of the total vehicle fleet.

The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling BEV in 2024, followed by popular models like the Tesla Model 3, Ford Mustang Mach-E, BYD Atto 3 and Nissan Leaf. Corporate fleets are increasingly making the switch to EVs, recognising long-term cost savings and sustainability benefits.

Charging Infrastructure Expansion

One of the biggest enablers of EV adoption is the growing charging network. Companies like Xube Energy are making EV charging more accessible by providing complete solutions - including hardware, software, installation, and maintenance - ensuring that both businesses and individuals can charge with ease.

Business and Fleet Electrification

Despite shifts in government incentives, businesses remain committed to sustainability. Many organisations are electrifying their fleets, supported by customised charging infrastructure that optimises operations and reduces long-term costs. Xube Energy is at the forefront, helping businesses implement scalable, efficient charging solutions tailored to their needs.

Smart Charging and Renewable Integration

As New Zealand continues its renewable energy transition, integrating EV charging with solar and wind energy presents exciting opportunities. Smart charging solutions, like those offered by Xube Energy, allow EV owners to manage charging times efficiently, reducing costs and maximising the use of clean energy.

Looking Ahead to 2025

While 2024 brought changes, the future of EVs in New Zealand remains bright. Advancements in battery technology, increased corporate adoption, and continued investment in charging infrastructure will help accelerate growth. With companies like Xube Energy providing end-to-end EV charging solutions, the transition to a cleaner, more efficient transport future is well underway.

The journey to electrification continues, and with the right solutions in place, New Zealand is set to remain a leader in sustainable mobility.
